- College Town: A college or university shapes the population, culture, and economy.
- Hybrid Star: Within about 1.5 hours of a major metro: big-city access with small-town life.
- 2nd Home Haven: A favorite for second homes and part-time residents: seasonal owners shape the housing, the calendar, and the downtown.
About the town
This small town embraces the train that runs through it.
Ashland is the town that runs the railroad down the middle of its own downtown. More than 30 trains a day roll between the shops and the Randolph-Macon College lawn, and Amtrak still stops at the 1923 station. Locals call it the Center of the Universe, half joking. It sits about 15 miles north of Richmond, which makes it a college town and a commuter town at the same time.
This town is best for
- Richmond workers who love the walkable downtown.
- Train Lovers of all ages.
- Empty Nesters who embrace nearby campus life.

A downtown where the main event is a train rolling down the middle
Stand on Railroad Avenue for a few minutes and a freight train will rumble past close enough to feel, with Amtrak cars in the mix. That is the show, and the whole downtown faces it.worth weighing Drink an experimental pour at Origin Beer Lab, catch a film or a concert at Ashland Theatre, then ride the Ashland Trolley Line Trail, now the paved north end of the Fall Line.

An accredited Main Street and an energy incubator, a mile off I-95
Downtown Ashland has held Main Street America accreditation since 2013, and it shows in an organized merchant base and a steady calendar of events that bring buyers to the tracks. Entrepreneurs get a real on-ramp at the Dominion Energy Innovation Center, a coworking space and energy-tech accelerator in a renovated downtown fire station. I-95 is about a mile from the tracks, so customers are not only local. Broadband is the caution: Xfinity cable reaches about 81% of town, but fiber covers only about a quarter.worth weighing

Walkable small-town living with Richmond close and Amtrak at the corner
Ashland works for people who want a walkable small town with the city close by. Downtown Richmond is 16 miles down I-95, Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center is in Mechanicsville, also in Hanover County, and Amtrak to Washington leaves from the downtown station. It is priced like the Richmond suburb it partly is, so bargain hunters should look elsewhere. The trains that charm visitors are also a daily soundtrack, so light sleepers should spend an evening near any house close to the tracks.worth weighing
The unique magic ingredients
Sparks & Vibes
CSX and Amtrak tracks run straight through downtown between the two sides of Railroad Avenue, and more than 30 trains pass every day. Each spring the town celebrates them at Ashland Train Day.
A former mayor coined the nickname with a wink, and the town wears it everywhere, right down to the name of the local Chick-fil-A.
Randolph-Macon College faces the downtown shops across the rails, so the college and Main Street share a front yard, and the campus lawn hosts the town's biggest festival.
Since 1982, more than 300 vendors have filled the Randolph-Macon campus each June for the Ashland Strawberry Faire, with proceeds going to scholarships and local nonprofits.
The planned 43-mile Fall Line Trail from Ashland to Petersburg begins at Carter Park and follows the old Richmond-Ashland trolley line. Hanover's 4.8-mile segment, the first regional piece, opened in 2025.
The way we see it, Sparks are the places, events, and activities that you remember about a MoxieTown, the ones that set them apart, the ones they are known for, and make a lasting impression.
Vibes, on the other hand, are that all-over feeling you get from a place, its unique ambiance.
The Vibe
Railside & Thriving
Conversation on Railroad Avenue pauses mid-sentence while another freight rolls past the shops and the station.
The Downtown Scene
Downtown is a compact four-block corridor along the tracks, with Railroad Avenue running down both sides and England and Thompson streets crossing. Storefronts face historic homes and the Randolph-Macon campus across the rails. The Henry Clay Inn sits beside the 1923 station, Tiny Tim's Trains & Toys leans happily into the theme, and people live right here, in the houses along Center Street.
When you visit
Quick Tips for When You Go.
Ashland makes an easy overnight for train lovers and a sweet day trip for everyone they bring along. Arrive by Amtrak if you can, drop your bag near the station, and spend the afternoon trackside with a drink, counting cars. In season, Saturday mornings belong to the farmers market and evenings to a show at the theater. It rewards an unhurried pace, and it pairs nicely with a weekend in Richmond.
Foodie Scene
Ashland's food and drink scene clusters along Railroad Avenue, all within a few minutes' walk of the station, and most of it is casual and moderately priced. The chains live out by I-95.
A small-batch taproom a few steps from the tracks, pouring rotating experimental drafts plus cans, wine and non-alcoholic options. Closed Mondays.
A wine, beer and specialty food market since 1997, with a seasonal farm-to-table cafe added in 2015 and a menu that changes with what local farms bring in.
The lunch stop by the station, known for boxed lunches, quiche, chicken salad and whole cakes and pies. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
A full-service dining room on the corner of Railroad Avenue and England Street, open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday and for lunch from Wednesday on. Closed Mondays.
Memorable Stays
Plan around early June for the Strawberry Faire or spring's Train Day, when downtown is at its liveliest. Fourth Fridays bring evening music and vendors from May through October. Rooms near the tracks are few, so book event weekends early.
The Henry Clay Inn is a Georgian Revival inn beside the station that revives the name of the 1906 Henry Clay Hotel. It has about 15 rooms, including two suites, all with private baths, and a parlor balcony overlooking the station and the college.
Hampton Inn Richmond-North/Ashland on England Street is the closest chain hotel to downtown, under a mile from the tracks.
Americamps RV Resort & Cottages offers RV sites and cottages about 4 miles from downtown.
Shopping & Strolling
Strolling here is a loop of Railroad Avenue, Hanover Avenue and England Street, with a passing train pausing most conversations. Among the shops worth a look: Center of the Yarniverse for knitters, Caravati's Architectural Salvage on England Street, Wagner Jewellers on Hanover Avenue, and Ashland Feed Store on Thompson Street.

These figures cannot begin to represent the people you will actually meet. They are a sketch of the tapestry, not the portrait. Every MoxieTown is measured the same way, on a 3-mile radius from the heart of town, and 1 mile when the question is walking distance, so towns compare apples to apples, whoever provides the water or collects the taxes.
