About the town
Old-time music town on the Blue Ridge Plateau
Floyd is a town of fewer than 500 people on the Blue Ridge Plateau, and every Friday night the Floyd Country Store fills with fiddles, banjos and the people who came to hear them. Around that crossroads sit galleries, a coffee roaster with a national following, and a fiber network that reaches every home in the county. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs a few miles south.

A Friday-night string band in a country store open since 1910
Friday night at the Floyd Country Store is the reason to come. The Friday Night Jamboree starts at 6:30 and runs until about 10, in a building that has been a store since 1910, and the Sunday jam is worth staying for. On Saturday morning the Floyd Farmers Market sets up under the pavilion on Locust Street, and the Blue Ridge Parkway at Rocky Knob is a short drive south. The Blue Ridge Parkway, nearby, calls to bikers and road-trippers alike

County-wide gigabit fiber and a roaster that ships nationally from a crossroads
Floyd has something few towns its size can claim: Citizens Telephone Cooperative finished a fiber build in 2024 that connected every home in Floyd County to gigabit service. Red Rooster Coffee has roasted here since 2010 and has made Coffee Review's top-coffees list for more than a decade, proof that a business can sell nationally from this crossroads. The visitor trade is real but seasonal, strongest in summer and around FloydFest in July, and the year-round local customer base is small.worth weighing Notably, there are 20k people within a 3 mile radius.

Land, music and quiet on the plateau, with the hospital 26 miles off
Floyd suits people who want land, music and quiet more than convenience: artists, makers, retirees and remote workers who can live on fiber. The town's median home value is about $242,600, and a Food Lion covers groceries. Floyd County High School has a GreatSchools College Success Award. The nearest hospital, Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, is about 26 miles away, with Level I trauma care in Roanoke. Winters on the plateau are cold and snowy, so it fits less well if you dread February.worth weighing
The unique magic ingredients
Sparks & Vibes
It began in the early 1980s, when local bluegrass players practicing at what was then Cockram's General Store left the doors open for the people gathering outside. Today the Floyd Country Store runs it every Friday from 6:30 to about 10, with a Sunday mountain music jam as well.
Floyd is a hub on The Crooked Road, Virginia's Heritage Music Trail, and County Sales in town stocks what it calls the world's largest selection of old-time and bluegrass recordings.
Five days of music on seven-plus stages in Floyd County, FloydFest ran July 22 to 26 in 2026 and returns July 21 to 25, 2027.
Citizens Telephone Cooperative spent seven years building 715 miles of fiber and in 2024 became the first provider in Southwest Virginia to connect every home in a single county to 1 Gbps service.
The nonprofit Floyd Center for the Arts runs three galleries, art classes, the Floyd Artisan Trail and the Floyd Living Traditions Festival.
The way we see it, Sparks are the places, events, and activities that you remember about a MoxieTown, the ones that set them apart, the ones they are known for, and make a lasting impression.
Vibes, on the other hand, are that all-over feeling you get from a place, its unique ambiance.
The Vibe
Front Porch
The town exudes a warm welcome and a pace that will soothe your soul.
The Downtown Scene
Downtown Floyd is a crossroads more than a strip, Main Street meeting Locust Street, with the Floyd Country Store holding South Locust. Dogtown Pizza, Pantoufle's Bistro and The Book House sit within a few minutes' walk, and The Farmer's Supply turned an 1897 hardware store on Main into suites, so a few people sleep above the shops.

When you visit
Quick Tips for When You Go.
Floyd is a Friday-to-Sunday trip for people who travel to hear music rather than see sights. Friday night belongs to the jamboree, Saturday morning to the farmers market and coffee, Saturday afternoon to the Parkway overlooks, and Sunday to the jam at the store. It rewards slow mornings and a car with a full tank. Come in summer for the long evenings and FloydFest, or in October, when the plateau turns color.
Foodie Scene
The eating is casual and moderately priced, mostly within a few blocks of the Main and Locust crossroads, with one bistro worth reserving.
Travel-inspired menus built on local sourcing, with lunch and dinner Thursday through Saturday and weekend brunch. Reservations are recommended; the chocolate shop Cocoa Mia shares the address.
Wood-fired pizza, taps and live music on South Locust, open late on Fridays and Saturdays.
A lunch cafe with homemade soups and Brunswick stew, plus a soda fountain with hand-dipped ice cream.
The cafe for a roaster whose coffees have appeared on Coffee Review's top-coffees list for more than a decade, on East Main.
Beer brewed on site and poured only there, with McDaniel's Tavern food and live music most weeks.
Memorable Stays
Early June through mid-September is the best stretch, and FloydFest in late July fills every bed in the county, so book that week months ahead.
A Virginia Green Lodging hotel built in 2007 and expanded in 2014, with rooms furnished by local woodworkers, a short walk from the country store.
Five apartment-style suites with full kitchens in an 1897 hardware store on East Main, with self check-in.
Open all year, with deluxe cabins, RV sites and tent camping about 5 miles from town.
Friday at Hotel Floyd for the Friday Night Jamboree, Saturday at the Floyd Farmers Market and Rocky Knob, Sunday at the Floyd Country Store jam.
Shopping & Strolling
The walk is short, a few blocks in each direction from the crossroads, and slow is the right speed. Among the shops worth a look are Republic of Floyd Emporium, with wine, craft beer and locally printed shirts, The Book House, a bookstore with a cafe, and the galleries of the Floyd Center for the Arts, a few minutes out on Parkway Lane.

These figures cannot begin to represent the people you will actually meet. They are a sketch of the tapestry, not the portrait. Every MoxieTown is measured the same way, on a 3-mile radius from the heart of town, and 1 mile when the question is walking distance, so towns compare apples to apples, whoever provides the water or collects the taxes.
