Lafayette park in Lagrange

LaGrange, GA

  • College Town: A college or university shapes the population, culture, and economy.
  • Hybrid Star: Within about 1.5 hours of a major metro: big-city access with small-town life.

About the town

Callaway roots, lakefront living, and a downtown with a story to tell

LaGrange took its name in 1828 from the French estate of Lafayette's wife, and the courthouse square he inspired still holds the fountain at the center of town. The Callaway family's textile fortune built the gardens, the college halls and a 2,500-seat amphitheatre; West Point Lake wraps the western edge of town, and Atlanta is about an hour up Interstate 85.

Through the Discover lens

A courthouse square with a fountain, a lake out back, and a summer stage

Start at Lafayette Square, the 1828 courthouse square where the Marquis now stands in the fountain, and walk a block to the dining rooms on Main Street. Hills & Dales Estate opens the Callaway family's house and gardens, cultivated for more than 180 years, Tuesday through Saturday. On a concert night, Sweetland Amphitheatre seats 2,500 under the trees at Boyd Park. The lake is a short drive, not a walk.worth weighing Coming soon is a one of a kind Cricket stadium - stay tuned for details.

Through the Prosper lens

Kia's payroll, Callaway Foundation money, and a Main Street still filling in

LaGrange has an industrial payroll most small towns lack: Kia Georgia builds cars 15 miles south in West Point. The Callaway Foundation funds civic projects, from the amphitheatre to the trail, and LaGrange College, founded in 1831, sits on the hill above downtown. Downtown holds about 57 shops, cafes and venues around Main Street.

Through the Dwell lens

A college town at a West Georgia price, with uneven schools and a lake

Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center is in town with a Level IV trauma designation; the nearest Level II is in Columbus, 45 miles. The median home value is near $236,000 in the 3-mile radius, ESRI 2026 estimate, and about three in five households rent. Formerly a mill town, much of the single family market is actually for rent. A great opportunity to build your dream.

The unique magic ingredients

Sparks & Vibes

Lafayette Square.

The town took its name in 1828 after Lafayette compared the countryside to his wife's estate; Lafayette Square was the courthouse square until 1936 and took its name in 1976, when a statue of the Marquis, owned by LaGrange College, went up in the fountain.

Sweetland Amphitheatre.

The Sweetland Amphitheatre at Boyd Park opened in spring 2016 with 2,500 seats, most of its construction paid by a Callaway Foundation grant, and now books national touring acts within walking distance of the square.

Hills & Dales Estate.

The Callaway family home and its gardens, cultivated for more than 180 years, open to visitors Tuesday through Saturday at Hills & Dales Estate.

West Point Lake.

The Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Chattahoochee stretches 35 miles along the state line with about 525 miles of shoreline, campgrounds and fishing piers; the project office is at West Point Lake.

The Thread.

The Thread is a 12-foot paved trail stitching parks and neighborhoods together, with about 13 of a planned 29 miles open.

The way we see it, Sparks are the places, events, and activities that you remember about a MoxieTown, the ones that set them apart, the ones they are known for, and make a lasting impression.

Vibes, on the other hand, are that all-over feeling you get from a place, its unique ambiance.

The Vibe

Legacy & Heart

A bronze Lafayette in a fountain, brick storefronts on Main Street, and students walking down the hill from the college.

The Downtown Scene

Main Street runs south from Lafayette Square past two- and three-story brick storefronts, with C'sons and Mare Sol sharing one address and Wild Leap pouring at the far end. The fountain, the Lafayette statue and the Legacy Museum on Main hold the north end, and Charlie Joseph's (directory link) has sold hot dogs a block away since 1920. Most visitors arrive by car and park once. The Courtyard hotel sits conveniently on the square and is an ideal place to stay.

These figures cannot begin to represent the people you will actually meet. They are a sketch of the tapestry, not the portrait. Every MoxieTown is measured the same way, on a 3-mile radius from the heart of town, and 1 mile when the question is walking distance, so towns compare apples to apples, whoever provides the water or collects the taxes.
