Plein Air Abingdon 2025: Where Art Wanders Off Its Canvas and Into the Highlands

Plein Air Abingdon Festival

Mark your calendars: This isn’t your average arts fair—Plein Air Abingdon 2025 unfolds over four glorious days from Wednesday, October 1 through Saturday, October 4, 2025

Why This Festival Feels Like a Fresh Breeze

Painting Where the Air Smells Like Inspiration

Plein air painting—French for “outdoors”—means artists are painting landscapes in real time, chasing light and shadow where they fall. It’s not just scenic—it’s cinematic.

Four Full Days, Twice the Views

Now in its 9th year, the festival expanded from a three-day to a four-day open-enrollment painting extravaganza. Artists, whether seasoned or just discovering a doodle, are invited to register, pay up, fill out the form—and lose themselves in the hills of Southwest Virginia.

Cash Prizes That Spark Friendly Rivalry

With $4,000 in total prizes, including Best in Show ($1,500), 1st ($1,000), 2nd ($600), 3rd ($400), and a Quick Draw ($500)—there’s plenty of incentive to make something spectacular.

Four Days of Artful Opportunities and Scenic Wonders

Opening Day (Wednesday, Oct. 1)
Artists roam and paint in “artist’s choice” locations throughout Southwest Virginia. By evening, a free pop-up gallery and reception at the charming Barns at Chip Ridge features a painting demo and chat with juror Jeremy Sams. Art sells, community mingles—magic happens.

Day Two (Thursday, Oct. 2)
Welcome to Nicewonder Farm & Vineyards—vineyards meet rolling Appalachians. Artists paint, and the evening hosts another free pop-up and reception at The Tasting Room. Gorgeous views, wine… need I say more?

Grand Finale (Friday, Oct. 3)
The final act plays out in Abingdon’s historic district, as selected works make their debut at a juried art show at William King Museum. VIP ticket holders enjoy an hour of early access, local wine, and bites; then the gallery opens to the public—no ticket required.

Why Abingdon Makes It All Work

Small Town, Big Palette

With more restaurants per capita than NYC, a historic inn like the Martha Washington Inn, and the delightful blend of nature and creativity, Abingdon makes for the perfect backdrop for fall days drenched in art.
