The Heart of Aiken's Equestrian Culture

The Aiken Steeplechase is a cornerstone of Aiken's rich equestrian heritage. This bi-annual event showcases the town's deep-rooted love for horses and the sport of steeplechase racing. The fall steeplechase closes out the season as the south’s fall weather settles on South Carolina. It is a little bit more intimate with an estimated 30,000 persons in attendance - while the spring steeplechase attracts upwards of 100,000. So, if you are new to the game - perhaps taking in the fall event is a perfect first step. In 2024 the event is set for Saturday, November 23, 2024 beginning at 8 am!

A Brief History

Steeplechase racing in Aiken dates back to the early 20th century when wealthy northerners began wintering in the area. They brought with them a passion for equestrian sports, laying the foundation for what would become a cherished local tradition. While steeple chase is not the only equestrian event, Aiken features just about everyone you can imagine, this event captures the community.

Race Day Atmosphere

The late November event offers a unique autumn experience in the South. As the air turns crisp and the leaves change color, Aiken comes alive with the excitement of the fall steeplechase.

While smaller than the fall event, you still experience a sea of tailgating tents, the aroma of Southern cuisine wafting through the air, and the buzz of anticipation as spectators gather to watch the races. It's not just about the horses—it's a full-day social event where fashion, food, and fun take center stage.

More Than Just Racing

The steeplechase events offer a variety of activities that extend beyond the racetrack:

  • Tailgating Competitions: Showcasing Southern hospitality at its finest

  • Shopping Village: Local vendors offer everything from equestrian gear to artisanal crafts

  • Junior Jockey Activities: Encouraging the next generation of horse enthusiasts

  • Live Music: Adding to the festive atmosphere throughout the day

Community Impact

The Aiken Steeplechase Association's commitment to the community goes beyond providing entertainment. Proceeds from the events support local charities and contribute to the preservation of Aiken's open spaces.
