A Quicktake: Camden, Maine
Perched on the rugged coast of Maine, about 80 miles northeast of Portland, Camden greets visitors with a picturesque blend of maritime charm and mountain vistas. The downtown area, with its classic New England architecture and vibrant seaside energy, invites you to step back in time while enjoying modern amenities. This part of midcoast Maine offers so much and within a short drive there are even more small towns and new vistas to take in, that it feels like the charm of Camden just overflows north, south and west.
The population is around 5,000 people but swells to three times the size during the “high season” between Memorial Day and Labor Day. While this town is still a summer town, it is gaining year round residents at am impressive clip.
Arts and Entertainment
The Camden Opera House, a cultural cornerstone since 1894, hosts an eclectic mix of performances year-round. Nearby, the Camden Public Library's amphitheater, a National Historic Landmark, offers a unique outdoor venue for community events. Art enthusiasts will delight in the numerous galleries showcasing local talent, inspired by the panoramic views of Penobscot Bay.
Getting Outdoors
Camden's natural beauty is on full display at Harbor Park, where you can relax by the waterfall or watch boats glide into the harbor. For a more adventurous outing, hike the trails at Camden Hills State Park, just minutes from downtown. The reward? Breathtaking views of the town and bay from atop Mount Battie. On a clear day it feels like you can see forever.
Shopping and Local Businesses
Main Street boasts a delightful array of independent shops. Browse handcrafted items at Small Wonder Gallery or lose yourself among the shelves at Owl & Turtle Bookshop Café. For a taste of nostalgia, Uncle Willy's Candy Shoppe offers homemade fudge and classic confections. Unique boutiques line the heart of downtown Camden and offer a visitor an endless trail of treasures to peruse. While winter months do find some of these stores on vacation, many are there for the residents year round.
Dining Highlights
Camden's culinary scene is a seafood lover's paradise. Savor fresh-caught lobster at Waterfront or enjoy innovative Thai cuisine at Long Grain. For a quick bite, Camden Deli serves up hearty sandwiches with a side of harbor views or gather gourmet picnic offerings including fresh fruit and a nice selection of wine from French and Brawn. One of the town’s newest offerings has taken up residency in the old Mariner’s location. Buttermilk Biscuit Kitchen, straight from Atlanta, has won over the heats and appetites of the locals and the visitors alike.
Community and Culture
There is always something to do or join in this busy town, but summer time puts this on adrenaline. Coming at the end of the summer months, the Camden Windjammer Festival is the largest gathering of sailing ships in the Northeast, celebrating Camden's rich maritime heritage each Labor Day weekend. The annual Jazz in June festival fills the streets with music, while the Camden Arts and Book Fair celebrates creativity twice a year. Locals and visitors alike gather at Lucky Betty's, a garage-turned-boutique bar, embodying the town's welcoming atmosphere or on the warmest of days, or they enjoy the sea breezes at The Wharf at Lyman Morse. There are so many centers of community in this warm, inviting town.
Business Climate
Camden, like many idyllic locales, grew the year round population following the reset of 2020. Today the small town offers robust broadband and cellular service, making it an attractive spot for remote workers and digital nomads who have had a taste of living in a picture perfect town. While we did not see specific co-working spaces, we suspect the local coffee shops and the library will fill in nicely in the mean time.
Not to miss experience
No visit to Camden is complete without setting sail on a historic schooner. These majestic vessels offer a unique perspective of the coastline and a taste of Maine's rich maritime heritage. An hour sail on the Schooner Olad or day-long adventures to the outer islands is a marvelous way to enjoy this beautiful coastline.
