Riding a wave
Change happens fast, and it's not always easy to understand its full impact while we're in the middle of its maddness.
MUSINGS
I was watching a show about the large waves off the coast of Portugal. These waves draw surfers from all over the globe for the chance to encounter the largest waves ever. They come not only to encounter these magnificent waves but to survive and come out on the other side as champions. I can only imagine what it must be like to be caught up in the “barrel” of the wave, where you can’t see the shore or the sky. It must be terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time.
These days before us feel like that to me.
I think we can all relate to that feeling sometimes. Things are changing so quickly in how we work, where we live, and even how we do everyday tasks. It can be overwhelming if we don’t dare to dream. If we don’t believe we can come out on the other side as champions.
Just like an experienced surfer sees one of these monster waves as a chance for greatness, some people are starting to see the opportunities within these changes, the ones that can take you places you never imagined. They're looking for ways to make life better, build stronger communities, and follow their passions. Dreams that once seemed impossible are now being considered a possibility. It's an exciting and sometimes scary time as we think about all the new opportunities!
Working Remote
Because of the pandemic, many people had to start working from home suddenly. Our dining room tables became our offices, and we became pros at video calls and working in our comfy clothes. For many, the idea of not commuting daily was exciting. But for others, being stuck in their apartments felt like being in jail. Is there a way to enjoy the freedom of remote work while living in a place we love?
Retirement or Scaling-Back
As we get closer to retirement, we realize that things won't go back to how they used to be. Some of our friends retire early, and our neighbors downsize their lives. We appreciate having a yard or outdoor space more and reconsider living in a busy city. We explore different options for the next chapter of our lives, trying to stretch our retirement savings further and embracing a different way of life.
Pursuing a Passion
Recent events might have given us the time to dream about new ideas or made us realize that our passions could lead to something big. People from all walks of life, regardless of age or money, are becoming entrepreneurs. Small towns, with their lower cost of living and strong sense of community, are great places to start something new.
Raising Young Families
Thanks to online education programs, families have more choices in where they live. They don't have to base their decisions solely on schools anymore. This, along with the rising costs of living in big cities, is making smaller communities more attractive. Many families are drawn to places with bigger yards, access to activities, and a close-knit community.
Quality of Life
If you've already designed a work-life that allows you to live anywhere, you might be longing for a town that reminds you of where you grew up. Picture a local grocery store, a coffee shop that becomes a wine bar at night, and a peaceful swimming spot that feels like your own. Creating a relaxed and connected lifestyle in a small town is one of the opportunities that come with this time of fast change. While the rest of the world keeps innovating, it's nice to enjoy the simple pleasures from your front porch on a quiet street in the countryside.
Where do you fit in this wave of opportunity and dreams? Finding the perfect town for you, your family, or your business can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.
Join us as we explore charming towns and discover what makes each one special. Even though we might not fully understand the magnitude of these changes in our lifetimes, many of us are taking advantage of the chance to create a life we once only dreamed of. So, dream big and seize the opportunities that are coming your way.
