Who also strive for a big quality lifestyle

We love a small town located within a reasonable drive to major metro areas. Austin and San Antonio are less than 2 hours away, and San Antonio is barely over an hour. This opens up the possibility for so many to live their small-town life and pursue careers that may be restricted to the larger cities. This is particularly the case in hybrid work environments. Fredericksburg and the Texas Hill Country offer a variety of programs and plans to support entrepreneurs and remote workers.

The city's Comprehensive Plan Update and Parks Master Plan 2023 highlights the city's commitment to promoting and enhancing key areas of importance while accommodating future trends, which includes supporting businesses and remote work.

“Workcation” is the new option

Fredericksburg is also promoting the concept of a "workcation", encouraging remote workers to enjoy the unique lodging, natural scenic beauty, and other amenities the city has to offer while working. Recognizing that 2020 gave many of us a taste of small-town life, the city highlights various lodging options set up to give you a true home office, including hotels and motels with office desks and chairs or on-site conference room space. The area also has nearly 1,500 vacation rentals, B&Bs, guesthouses, and inns, many featuring dedicated workspaces, high-speed internet, and wifi.

We all know that time for relaxation and recreation improves our mental health and creativity - and Fredericksburg is overflowing. Excellent eateries, spas, wineries, and remarkable access to the great outdoors makes this town a wonderful option for both the digital nomads as well as remote workers seeking that elusive work-life balance.

Co-Working Spaces in short supply

For those who enjoy co-working spaces, there may be a business opportunity here to create one. We were surprised that the closest ones we found were in San Antonio, and there were actually Executive Suites. However, as remote workers know, a good coffee shop or a well-equipped library can provide excellent stand-ins until one is launched in this vibrant town.

We found a few remote-worker escapes and places for connection. Plus they all have wifi!

For entrepreneurs, the Gillespie County Economic Development Commission provides resources for current and future business owners, including demographics, community information, and the cost of doing business in Fredericksburg. The city also offers the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) Program, which provides financial incentives for large projects incorporating energy-saving improvements.

Texas is big on small business

You know you are in the heart of remote work and an incubator culture when the Governor's Small Business Summit was held in Fredericksburg in 2023. The state will continue these summits each year in different small towns. This provides small business owners and entrepreneurs with key insights on critical business topics and the opportunity to network with other business owners and meet experts who can share timely, relevant, and actionable advice on a multitude of small business topics.

New developments that could provide further opportunities for entrepreneurs are currently underway. For instance, a 117-acre development is being built, which will include shops, restaurants, and an expansive promenade. Read more about that here.

We like the pace and atmosphere in Fredericksburg for entrepreneurs and remote workers, with a lower cost of living and a thoughtful attitude toward pro-growth with a variety of resources and programs designed to help them succeed. If you are Texas bound, as so many are, this is a town you should consider. Besides, everyone needs to spend some time in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
