Local shops worthy of a trip south
Thomasville is a charming small town that's big on local businesses. From bookstores to cheese shops and restaurants, this town is a treasure trove of unique, locally-owned retailers that add to its vibrant community spirit. We were delighted to find, again and again, that the town’s sons and daughters may have ventured out for a season, but not only did they return but returned with ideas and investment. These are just a few of the ones we fell in love with.
The Bookshelf: A Community's Literary Heart
If you have been following MoxieTowns at all, you know we are fools about the independently owned bookstores and love nothing more to find them in the heart of the town. The Bookshelf, is just that bookstore - located in downtown, it is more than just a place to buy books. It's a community hub where locals and visitors alike can engage in meaningful conversations, attend exciting events, and of course, discover their next favorite read.
Owner Annie B. Jones and her dedicated team have curated various books across various genres, literary-themed accessories, beautiful cards, and papers. The store also hosts workshops, story times for kids, literary luncheons, author signings, book club knitting nights, and even offers a book-a-month subscription service for adults and for younger readers.
Sweet Grass Dairy: A Family Affair
We found out about Sweet Grass Dairy at our own local favorite farm-to-table restaurant. Sweet Grass Dairy is a family-owned business that has been producing world-class cow cheeses since 2000. The dairy was born out of a desire to highlight the delicious, grass-based milk that their cows were producing through a range of handcrafted cheeses.
Today, Sweet Grass Dairy is run by Jessica and Jeremy Little, who have continued to grow the business by expanding the distribution of their cheeses nationally and opening a restaurant in downtown Thomasville. A visit to town is not complete without a stop at the shop and taking a few tasty choices with you. The dairy has received over 30 national and international awards for their cheeses, which are made from the milk of healthy, barn-free cows grazing on grass grown year-round under the Georgia sun.
Jonah's Fish & Grits: A Culinary Delight
Jonah's Fish & Grits is a beloved local restaurant that offers a refined twist on the English concept of "fish & chips," served up with southern tradition, flair, and hospitality.
Their menu is packed with fresh and "house-made" options, whether you prefer items from the sea or land. From their signature fish fry catfish to their pineapple-bourbon chicken, Jonah's Fish & Grits takes extra care in providing the best service in a family-friendly environment. The place is often packed so make your plans ahead of time!
SouthLife Supply Co.: Handcrafted Heirloom Leather Goods
SouthLife Supply Co., started by husband and wife team Kelly and Heather Abbott, is a nationally recognized brand that produces quality handmade heirloom leather goods right in the heart of quail country. Their products, made with the finest materials, including full-grain genuine leather and solid brass hardware, are beautifully unique due to the differing grain patterns that appear in the tanning and manufacturing of their products.
Fuzzy Goat: A Yarn Shop with a Twist
Fuzzy Goat is a delightful and eclectic yarn shop in the historic district. This shop is knitting together the community by putting consciously chosen yarns into the hands of both the new and experienced. They host classes and events jointly with other local businesses, making it a fun and memorable place to visit. Even if you don’t knit or crochet – follow them on Instagram as their photos will have you giving it second thoughts and dreaming up your next project.
The Pink Valise: A Passion for Fashion & a Cure for Cancer
The Pink Valise Boutique is a family-owned business that is known for its annual Girl's Night Out event for different cancer organizations. This boutique is loved by locals for its great selections and the owner's knack for knowing what looks good on you. No need to head to the big city – they have you covered.
