Stargazing is an ageless activity and perfect for summer nights. One of the many benefits of living and visiting small towns is that you are often far away from the city lights. We found this interesting website that shows you the darkest skies in the US - so you can plan a star gazing outing of your own. The next New Moon is the first week of August - so plan ahead for a sky where the milkyway will feel like you can touch it!

Knowing that Maine and New Hampshire are set, for the most part, away from the big metros we took a look at some of the best places there. Here are some charming small towns where you can experience the magic of the night sky away from city lights. Each town offers unique spots for stargazing, along with recommended outfitters, if available, for a more organized and educational experience. Of course we included some great eateries nearby - but be aware they all close around 9 pm and the skies in summer are just getting dark by then.
