Might be the Sweetest Place in NH
We crafted our metrics, gathered our cameras and our desire to see more small towns near and far. A recent trip to New Hampshire and Vermont gave us the perfect window to breeze through a few in that brief moment between summer’s delight and the onslaught of “leaf peepers” seeking to capture this part of the US as it transforms into a breathtaking tapestry. Here is one of those towns we found irresistible.
Life is sweet with friends who have exceptional taste. It was the suggestion of just such a friend who summers in New Hampshire to not miss the little town of Walpole on my recent visit. What a quintessential New Hampshire hamlet!
In the heart of New Hampshire, set on the banks of the Connecticut River, lies Walpole, a hamlet that seems to have mastered the delicate dance between preserving its historical charm and embracing the conveniences of modern life. Bustling with those retired from the corporate world and young people enjoying the pace and charm of such a town – and most likely enjoying the plethora of recreational options just a short drive away.
Walpole's layout is a living testament to New England's architectural heritage. The quiet town green remains true to the pattern of growth that Walpole has seen. Simple and inviting – the green reserves a piece of the town shared by everyone. While it can get lively during the summer productions by the local theater troup - it's always there as a sanctuary for reflection, relaxation, and the strengthening of community bonds.
Now, any mention of Walpole would be ridiculously incomplete without diving into its culinary wonders. LA Burdick's Chocolates and The Restaurant at Burdick's are the stars of the show, where gourmet chocolates and French-inspired dishes promise a symphony of flavors. LA Burdick’s is famous for their delectable chocolates and seasonal treats, but on a cool fall day it is their hot chocolate that cannot be missed. Made from shaved, crafted chocolate – placed in a mug and covered with steamed milk and topped with foam. Decadent does not even begin to describe!

The Restaurant at Burdick’s is a destination unto itself. Its menu is a “harmonious blend of New England traditions and French bistro classics” all made from fresh, local, and high-quality ingredients. Its delightful interior will surprise those expecting a typical local eaterie.
But the gastronomic journey doesn't end there. More local eateries surround the heart of the village center, offering a diverse palette of delights, from cozy cafes to pizza to the one and only Spencer’s. I enjoyed my first N’oreaster here, made with local maple syrup. Yum!! This is where the locals enjoy a bite and a brew to catch up on the latest stories. They also have the friendliest servers around – a testament to the welcoming heart of this town.
For those who have the privilege of calling Walpole home, Walpole Grocery (WG by the locals) is a haven for food enthusiasts. Of course, if you have plans for a picnic in the surrounding countryside, this is a don’t miss. Dedicated to fostering close ties with local farmers and artisan producers, this store boasts a plethora of locally sourced and international artisanal goods, from cheeses to meats, bakery items, and delectable in-house prepared foods.
Living in Walpole seems like it would be like being part of a close-knit family. The community spirit is palpable, and the village offers a delightful blend of tradition and modernity. With education, healthcare, and other essential services at arm's reach, residents are well catered to. Notably, just a short 30-minute drive south, Keene, NH, boasts a top-tier hospital under the prestigious Dartmouth Health umbrella.
Nature lovers and winter sports enthusiasts are in for a treat. Walpole is also home to the Walpole Mountain State Forest, which covers over 14,000 acres of land. The forest is popular for hiking, camping, and fishing. When you tire of that, the majestic Green Mountains of Vermont are just about an hour beyond the river that separates the state from Vermont, beckoning with their unparalleled beauty. Add to that the picturesque allure of New Hampshire’s Lake district, about an hour to the east, and you've got a haven for hiking, skiing, and myriad adventure activities.
Walpole's strategic location also ensures ease of connectivity for visitors and residents alike. With quick access to the highway interstate, Boston, with its metropolitan allure and historical charm, is just a drive away. Not to mention, a myriad of other attractions and cities lie within reach, waiting to be explored.
Before I arrived, the town was described as “sleepy.” While there is an undoubtedly relaxed pace, I found it brimming with energy – particularly considering it has a population of less than 4,000. Tuck this on your destinations for your next trip to New Hampshire or for somewhere to make your tomorrows – and if you love chocolate – plan to stay a while!
