Who is minding the street?
This week I found myself in the warm company of Main Street directors and downtown managers from across the landscape of Georgia at the Georgia Downtown Conference. MoxieTowns may sometimes have a Southern flair, but we follow the song of every small town's heart.
Those towns that harness this opportunity, cultivating growth without losing their endearing charm, are the real champions.
So, fear not, dear Northern friends; New Hampshire and Vermont are next on our map of explorations. The spirit of small towns is not confined by latitude but thrives universally, now presenting opportunities for growth like sunbeams breaking through clouds. Those towns that harness this light, cultivating growth without losing their endearing charm, are the real heroes of our times.
In the embrace of downtown Canton, I encountered people from small towns across Georgia as most of the towns in this state are under 50,000 people, often significantly under! Each had their unique challenges and stories. These stories were so compelling and interesting that they could fill our blog for weeks.
What struck me the most was the energy, the anticipation, and the deep love for the era of small towns. It's a shared quest for innovation and support for local businesses that binds these communities together. The generosity of ideas, solutions, and encouragement to meet the opportunities that are present was remarkable.
It is a good time to start a business in a small town
Should your entrepreneurial spirit be drawn to a small town's allure, we have some advice. Find out who holds the torch as Main Street Director or downtown development manager. The titles may differ, but the essence remains – understanding their engagement with businesses and assessing their vigor and their creativity. Are they locked in the past, or do they welcome the new breeze? For nothing, absolutely nothing, is as it once was.
Engage with the artisans of your targeted town, the business owners. Their stories will reveal the advocate you might have, the success they've found, the obstacles they've overcome. If you meet a Main Street director whose ideas sparkle explore how they see the future. Understand the town's rhythm, the needs, the market demands, and the opportunities they envision for new businesses.
What is your dream? A culinary concept, a retail haven, or perhaps a fusion of both? A good director will guide you, endear you, and be the ally you need in understanding the town's complex yet beautiful dance.
The journey through the enchanting small-town paradise of MoxieTowns continues. There's so much to unfold, so many streets to wander, and endless dreams to explore. Stay with me as we venture into these havens, where life is has much warmth, creativity, and boundless potential.
