The Shenandoah Railroad’s New Vista-Dome Adventure from Staunton

Picture this: you’re sipping a Shenandoah Valley Chardonnay while your seat glides higher than the locomotive itself, sunlight bouncing off 360-degrees of curved glass. That’s not a travel writer’s daydream—it’s the brand-new “Shenandoah” vista-dome car on the Virginia Scenic Railway, affectionately known to locals as the Shenandoah Railroad. The domed beauty began life in 1948 on the legendary California Zephyr, spent a spell as country-icon Merle Haggard’s personal ride, and—after a top-to-tie restoration—now rolls out of downtown Staunton, Virginia.

Two routes, one unforgettable perch

  • Alleghany Special – Morning westbound (10:30 a.m.)

Three unhurried hours of emerald pastureland before ducking into the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests and pausing in tiny Goshen so the engine can pirouette for the return.

  • Blue Ridge Flyer – Afternoon eastbound (3:30 p.m.)

Roll past vineyards and villages, then thunder through the mile-long Blue Ridge Tunnel to Ivy before looping back toward Staunton’s steeples.

Both excursions run Thursday–Sunday and last a downright cinematic three hours—perfect for pairing with brunch downtown or a twilight stroll along Beverley Street afterward.

Why we’re smitten

  1. Living railroad history – Few rides let you lounge in a car once tricked out with Merle Haggard’s Murphy bed.

  2. Staunton synergy – Start or end your rail day with a wander through Staunton’s indie bookshops, farm-to-fork cafés, and Shakespeare’s Blackfriars Playhouse. Yes, Staunton punches way above its population size. Check out the town here.

  3. Zero motion-sickness vibes – The route is smooth, the vistas wide, and the boxed-lunch upgrade keeps both hands free for photos.

  4. Rail-romance for every traveler – Families can dine downstairs; grown-ups can toast from the dome. Either way, the Shenandoah Valley does the bragging for you.
