Small Towns, Villages & Hamlets
Each small town whispers its own tale, distinct in its melody and rhythm. Some bustling with the energy of 50,000 souls, others humming the tranquil song of a mere 1,000 inhabitants. We embark on this journey from the heart of the south, within arm's reach of countless remarkable towns, each with its own allure.
Small Town or a Hamlet?
The term "small town" encapsulates a spectrum of places as diverse as the people inhabiting them. Some are burgeoning with 50,000 inhabitants; others are intimate communities just cresting a 1,000. To make sense of this diverse tapestry, we've broadly categorized them into:
Small Towns: Those nurturing 25,000 to 50,000 people.
Village Towns: The cozy homes to 10,000 to 25,000 individuals.
Hamlet Towns: The close-knit communities of fewer than 10,000.
This isn't a perfect system, but it respects the unique rhythm of each town. We notice that even the smallest town, when perched at the edge of a metropolis, draws energy from the larger urban sphere. Rural towns, on the other hand, dance to a slower beat, relying on locals, tourists, and the occasional traveler. But that's the magic of it all, the diversity of experience - from the vibrant city edge to the tranquil rural backroads.
We're eager to delve into the labyrinth of backroads, unveil the effects of seasonality, distance, and proximity, and bring you tales from these small-town wonders. The allure of small towns on the periphery of our bustling cities won't escape our attention either. These towns bridge the best of both worlds: the vibrancy of city life and the warmth of small-town hospitality.
Once a Mill Town
A stone's throw from my home sits a charming small town of about 35,000 inhabitants. For many Atlantans, this town may be merely a dot on the interstate, an hour away. Yet, within this historic mill town flows a wild river that lovingly embraces its downtown. Here, the residents and visitors can kayak, enjoy a riverside run, or partake in an outdoor concert by the water.
The town, Canton, Georgia, benefiting from its proximity to Atlanta, attracts a steady stream of visitors to its riverside eateries, local breweries, and exciting events. Yet, we suspect many Atlanta residents are oblivious to the treasures that lie within this vibrant town.
Canton is a young, ambitious small town where the entrepreneurial spirit thrives, especially evident in the adaptive reuse project, The Mill at Etowah, nestled on the banks of the Etowah River. This creative hub pulses with the energy of makers and tech start-ups.

We will be back exploring Canton soon, but for those itching to discover more, Canton just unveiled a brilliant new website, www.explorecantonga.com, detailing everything the town offers. If you're quick, you might squeeze in a visit before school's back in session.
A Nearby Hamlet Town
On the smaller end of our scale lies the enchanting hamlet town of Ball Ground, home to just over 3,000 residents and hidden off I-575 and in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Its intimate charm and walkable downtown make it a hidden gem.
Anchored by a four-block stretch on Gilmer Ferry Road, you'll find an inviting bakery, a locally sourced brewery, and - the Ball Ground Burger Bus, home to what many claim to be the best burger ever made. I’m looking forward to sampling this culinary delight!
Canton and Ball Ground are nestled within Cherokee County, the seventh-largest county in Georgia. It offers the sweet balance of small-town living with many of the amenities found in larger metropolitan areas. Size can often be deceiving, and these towns, regardless of their population, stand as a testament to the fact that every small town can house a world of wonders. So, let's continue our journey as we find joy in the expected, surprise in the familiar, and truly discover what these small towns
You see, the size of a town doesn't determine its vitality or worth. It's the unique flavor, the undeniable spirit that makes each small town, village, or hamlet a universe of its own. From the youthful, ambitious vibrancy of Canton to the quiet, walkable charm of Ball Ground, each place holds treasures waiting to be discovered. As we embark on this journey together, remember it's not about the destination but the stories we find and the experiences we gather along the way.
