Tree House Café & Studio: Stay a Little Longer

Set right off the popular Swamp Rabbit Trail, which runs from Greenville to Travelers Rest, this is so much for than a cafe, more than a studio, it is a warm and charming “third place” where everyone is welcome.

The Kind of Place You Wish You’d Reached an Hour Earlier

Travelers Rest has a way of surprising you. You plan a simple Friday lunch, a quiet cup of coffee, and suddenly you’re wishing you had shown up early enough to stake out a table, order a second latte, and settle in with a paintbrush. That was my day at Tree House Café & Studio—a bright, easygoing hub on South Main Street where people don’t rush, food arrives with care, and creativity sits right in the open, waiting for you to join in.

Inside, the room hums with that unmistakable small-town warmth: friends reuniting over paninis or a warm cup of coffee, kids painting wooden animals, solo guests reading with iced coffee, and a steady stream of locals stopping by just to say hello. It’s the rare café where eating is only one of the reasons to be there. The other reasons—lingering, talking, painting, creating—are woven straight into the atmosphere.

Tree House serves breakfast and lunch all day, with a menu that leans fresh and unfussy. Their paninis and salads are known locally, and the coffee bar keeps a loyal following. Each plate feels intentional, not rushed, and the staff bring that same thoughtfulness to the service. I enjoyed a fabulous BLT with potato salad that should not be missed!

But the most captivating part is feeling like you are spending your day inside someones studio. The walls are lined with original art, that spills on to shelves and tables. If you are feeling creative there are shelves of paintable wood pieces, ceramics, canvases, jars of brushes, bright paints ready to go. You pick a project, pay for it, and take as long as you like. No pressure, no timetable—just a steady encouragement to participate in the creativity that fills the room. It’s a brilliant pairing with the café itself, and one that makes this space feel less like a stop and more like a stay.

I kept catching myself watching other tables—friends painting side-by-side, couples sharing a meal with friends without hurrying, parents getting a few blessed minutes of warm food while their kids focused on art. And all I could think was, I could’ve easily stayed here for hours. With the Swamp Rabbit Trail only steps away, it’s the perfect setup: paint, sip, linger, then head out for a brisk ride (or walk) when you’re ready to stretch your legs. It is a great destination if you live in Greenville - as the Swamp Rabbit Trail is a mere 22 miles of biking bliss away.

This is what makes the Tree House Cafe & Studio so special. It isn’t trying to be clever. It’s simply chosen to be generous—with its space, with its food, with the way it welcomes people in. That’s the hallmark of a strong small town.
